Joyce Maynard, JD Salinger's Lover, Has Yet To React To His Death

Daphne Joyce Maynard is an American writer famous for her relationship with late J.D. Salinger that happened when she was 18, but she has yet to react to the news of Salinger's death. Thirty-four years younger to J.D. Salinger, Maynard started her relationship with Salinger when he responded to her article published in the New York Times, complimenting her writing. Salinger and Maynard exchanged 25 letters after which she dropped out from Yale University to live with Salinger in New Hampshire. The relationship ended abruptly and unexpectedly for Joyce Maynard allegedly over Salinger's lack of desire to have children. She later married another man and had three children. Throughout his relationship with Maynard, Salinger stayed married to his wife Claire Douglas.

Maynard is most famous for her novel To Die For. She wrote about her affair with Salinger in her memoir At Home In The World. Maynard was forced to auction off Salinger's letters to put her children through school. Maynard now lives near San Marcos, Guatemala.
