Celebrities from across the country called in to say farewell and thank you to the radio pioneer.
Simpson began in radio as a teenager in Detroit before coming to Washington. He was with 93.9 WKYS for 16 years before moving his morning show to WPGC 95.5 in 1993, where he spent 16 years.

Donnie Simpson's Morning Show leaves WPGC 95.5 on air and online today. A local NBC reports that after 32 years on Washington's airwaves, host Donnie Simpson leaves his longtime station WPGC 95.5.
Simpson, 55, is under contract until March of 2011, but has sought to end his association with the CBS-owned station that has employed him as its signature morning personality since 1993.
Donnie Simpson's last WPGC showCBS will keep Simpson from jumping to another station by invoking the "non-compete" provision of his contract. The clause bars Simpson from working for a Washington-area station for the next 13 1/2 months. CBS invoked a similar provision in 2008 when another of its local personalities, Don Geronimo, left WJFK-FM before his contract had expired.
Simpson's departure follows months of declining ratings for his show and internal friction between Simpson and WPGC's management. The station has sought to boost Simpson's ratings and attract younger listeners by updating his playlist and playing hit songs more often. Simpson and his producer-son, Donnie Jr., have maintained that the station was meddling, compromising his long-running program and alienating loyal listeners.

After stepped into 95.5 WPGC, he and his producer-son, Donnie Jr., took Donnie Simpson’s morning show to huge heights. But 16 years later (today), it’s time to say goodbye to Donnie Simpson as he will be leaving the FM station after his lat show, which is most likely to be in Friday.
Reports say that the 55-year-old legend was forced to compromise on his creativity and playlist due to fall in ratings. The management forced him to play more current music rather than his usual playlist as they wanted to boostSimpson ’s ratings and attract younger listeners but according to him, according to him, the move was forcing him to compromise on his creativity and alienating loyal listeners.
Simpson has a “creative control” agreement in his contract which allows him to do whatever he thinks is correct for his show. It would be interesting to see if he files a lawsuit in respect to he being forced to compromise on creativity

Donnie Simpson, 32 year vetran of the DC airwaves, signed off on Friday morning. WPGC studios had a party like atmosphere in their offices as celebs from across the US called in to tell Donnie Simpson goodbye and share their thanks with Donnie Simpson for what a pioneer he had been in radio.

Reportedly Donnie Simpson's contract negotiations fell through with CBS Radio, and due to a non-compete clause, Donnie Simpson will not be allowed to work on air in Washington for more than a year.
"This is a temporary separation until February 2011," Simpson said on the air Friday morning, but Donnie Simpson did not reveal his future plans.

Joyce Maynard, Start Your Engine
The death of author J.D. Salinger at age 91 brings to mind an event several years ago at New Haven's International Festival of Arts & Ideas that featuied the popular The Moth.
The Moth features story tellers, some famous and some not, who tell true short stories from their lives, without notes.
One of the featured stiry tellers was Joyce Maynard, a writer who also became famous when she was younger for the short-lived relationship she had with Salinger.
"I''m sure she shudders at every time someone mentions Salinger to her," I remember telling my partner. After all, she was so young at the time and of course she would want to distance herself from something that happened during the Nixon administration. She was a writer in her own right, after all -- although I couldn't recall anything she had written.
Well, it took about four seconds before she talked about Salinger. And talk. And talk.
Somehow I have the feeling we'll be hearing a lot more from here now.

Joyce Maynard, JD Salinger's Lover, Has Yet To React To His Death
Daphne Joyce Maynard is an American writer famous for her relationship with late J.D. Salinger that happened when she was 18, but she has yet to react to the news of Salinger's death. Thirty-four years younger to J.D. Salinger, Maynard started her relationship with Salinger when he responded to her article published in the New York Times, complimenting her writing. Salinger and Maynard exchanged 25 letters after which she dropped out from Yale University to live with Salinger in New Hampshire. The relationship ended abruptly and unexpectedly for Joyce Maynard allegedly over Salinger's lack of desire to have children. She later married another man and had three children. Throughout his relationship with Maynard, Salinger stayed married to his wife Claire Douglas.
Maynard is most famous for her novel To Die For. She wrote about her affair with Salinger in her memoir At Home In The World. Maynard was forced to auction off Salinger's letters to put her children through school. Maynard now lives near San Marcos, Guatemala.

AP: J.D. Salinger, the author of "The Catcher in the Rye," has died at the age of 91 in New Hampshire, a author's literary agent. The reclusive author died of natural causes at his home in Cornish, N.H., according to his son.
News that author and historian Howard Zinn has died came out yesterday. Everyone should send good thoughts to their favorite authors right about now...

As one of the undoubted millions whose lives were changed by his writing, I mourn for a light that has gone out, but also ... that light was hidden away quite a long time ago. We can only wish solace for his family and friends, and as admirers be happy that his words are immortal.
There are all those rumors of unpublished manuscripts, waiting in safety deposit boxes with instructions not to be published until his death. Joyce Maynard, author of To Die For and Labor Day, was his former lover and stated that he continued to write well after ceasing to publish. His daughter, Margaret, wrote in her memoir that her father had a detailed filing system: what was to be published, what was to be edited first, etc ...
As we grieve for a life ended, perhaps the day will come soon when we can celebrate the immortality of his words. And more of them.

Joyce Maynard is gaining plenty of attention today in light of J.D. Salinger's death at 91.
Maynard's memoir "At Home In The World" in 1998 detailed her eight-month affair with Salinger in the 1970s, when she was 18 and he was 53.
Salinger retired from public life for many years. He made his last public appearance when he wrote a letter to Maynard, responding to concerns about a recent piece she wrote for the New York Times and discussing the dangers of publicity.
Maynard, an author like Salinger, started her writing career when she was 14. She has written two memoirs, as well as novels including To Die For (made into a movie starring Nicole Kidman) and The Usual Rules.
Maynard famously said of Salinger:
"Although Salinger had long since cut me out of his life completely and made it plain that he had nothing but contempt for me, the thought of becoming the object of his wrath was more than I felt ready to take on. "

Lingerie pics of Jenni Farley, aka "JWoww" of "Jersey Shore" fame, have turned up on RadarOnline.com, but hopeful voyeurs will be disappointed -- she shows off far less than on a typical night at Karma.
JWoww's patented boob slings show off more acreage than the long-line lingerie she donned while bartending at a private cigar club on Long Island, where she lives. Heck, we've seen more of her that night she wore personalized booty shorts and a T-shirt. Yes, we're already getting nostalgic ...

Jersey Shore' star wants to go to Vegas for second season of show

I know Jersey Shore cast members are notorious for saying the unexpected, but I still wasn't prepared for the line the hard-partying J-Woww dropped on me around 2 a.m. Sunday as we sat at a table at RiNo nightclub.
"I'm not drinking tonight," J-Woww said with pride.
The MTV reality television star, whose real name is Jenni Farley, told me she's been taking a break from alcohol and hitting the gym more often. Apparently, this approach has gotten her through numerous club and media appearances.
In the past10 days, J-Woww and her castmates filmed an MTV commercial in Venice Beach, Calif., they were guests on the Rachael Ray show in New York and they were forced to leave a New Jersey nightclub appearance because the venue couldn't control the larger-than-expected crowd.
"I don't know another reality show that has had this sort of impact," J-Woww said. "Maybe The Osbournes?"
What's been the highlight of Jersey Shore-mania?
"Celebs coming up to us. Leonardo DiCaprio came up to us and said 'GTL for life,'" she said -- a reference to The Situation's "Gym, tan, laundry" mantra.
J-Woww plans to use her fame to launch a fashion line, which she describes as "Affliction for women." She is designing the patterns herself (according to her Web site, she studied graphic design in college) and said she hopes to launch the line in the summer.
But J-Woww isn't just thinking about designing clothes these days. She's also thinking about taking them off.
"I would love to do Playboy," said JWoww, who claimed in an interview with Us Weekly that the men's magazine made her an offer to pose. "But right now I'm crossing my fingers for a second season of the show. Personally, I'd like to see us all go to Vegas."

According to RadarOnline.com, photos showing the reality star bare-bottomed are being shopped to several media outlets.
The raven-haired beauty is already popular for her cleavage-baring tops and tough attitude, reports the New York Daily News. And the photos reportedly show Farley wearing a pair of boots, a skimpy wrap around her waist and nothing else.
It is not clear when the photos were taken or what they were taken for. The lighting in the photos is said to be dark, with Farley posing in front of a brown background.
